WHEY PROTEIN: CHECK OUT THE FACTS
What is Whey protein?
Whey Protein is a miracle protein powder obtained from whey, which has the majority of essential amino acids. Whey is a watery substance derived from milk during the production of cottage cheese.
Different types
Whey protein comes in three types
1. Concentrate (WPC)
2. Isolate (WPI)
3.Hydrolysate (WPH)
The broadly used type is Concentrate (WPC).
If a person has lactose intolerance, then the Isolate (WPI) or Hydrolysate (WPH) comes first.
What does whey protein do?
Whey protein helps in promoting the anabolism because of the presence of leucine (high-quality protein source), which helps in muscle gain and fat loss.
Benefits of whey protein
There is numerous advantageousness in the consumption of whey on both the long and short term.
Muscle mass
Strength training paralleled with high protein foods will lead to decreased fat gain and increased muscle mass. Especially when Whey Protein is combined, there are tremendous results.
But then again, if the protein levels are already within the range, there is not going to be much of a change.
Reduces blood pressure
Whey Protein has an enzyme called cytokinins, which is an angiotensin-converting – enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors), which helps in lowering blood pressure.
On the other side of the coin, it is not used as a substitute for your blood pressure medication.
Type 2 Diabetes
Diabetes is a disorder in which there is very little or no production of insulin, causing a high blood sugar level.
Whey protein is used as a supplementary treatment for type 2 diabetes. It is compared to drugs like sulphonylurea. It is discovered that Whey Protein moderated insulin production in type 2 diabetes.
Reduces inflammation
There is a study that shows a more significant amount of Whey protein intake reduces the CRP (C reactive protein, a marker for inflammation). Henceforth lowers the inflammation.
Antioxidant
Whey protein is a cysteine-rich food. Cysteine plays a vital role in the production of glutathione, which helps the body to produce antioxidants. In cases where there is cysteine deficiency, whey protein can be taken as a supplement.
Lowers cholesterol levels
On long term consumption in high doses, it is said that Whey protein may decrease the cholesterol level. But there is not enough substantiation at this point.
Reduce weight
Intake of protein helps in weight loss and in fat burning. On top of all, that protein is a filling macronutrient. This helps in the consumption of fewer calories, which in turn leads to weight loss.
Overall, Whey protein is not just a protein supplement; it has other health benefits too.
